To celebrate my induction into the US Bicycling Ha

To celebrate my induction into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame, I’m sharing some of the milestones that have led me here. This humble print ad ran in the League of American Wheelmen magazine in the late 1980s. At the time, that magazine was where every cyclist went to find out where the bike rallies were and to read about cycling activities. Believe it or not, this was the ad that put me on the map! 🚲🩷

@lincolnbikekitchen really knows how to cook! Check out this pristine Terry Blue Moo that recently came into the shop. But even more than cool bikes, the kitchen has a cool mission: to empower people in Lincoln, NE, by actively promoting and advocating for cycling. Lincoln Bike Kitchen is run entirely by volunteers and supported by donations (bikes, parts, tools, money) from the community. Their philosophy is that cycling can be a fun, healthy, environmentally-friendly, and cost effective mode of transportation that should be made safe and available for everyone who wants to be a “biker.” 🚲🩵And I couldn’t agree more. I recently learned I’m being inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame. To celebrate, I’m sharing some of my favorite bike memories, like this one—the absolute freedom of riding my first bike.

Just how did I get into bicycling? On my own! I started late because my parents didn’t think I could ride. So I saved up and got this bike when I was 13. It was a shiny, red, one-speed girl’s Schwinn American that cost me $49.95.

I had to walk it a mile home from the bike dealer because I didn’t know how to ride. I taught myself while leaning against a tall fence in our yard and pedaling until I started to get the hang of balancing.

My dad wouldn’t let me loose in the neighborhood until I proved I could negotiate an obstacle course he set up in the backyard with tin cans. Once I passed his test, I was free. Really free. Like in a way I had never known before. I explored familiar places and eagerly ventured into new territory. I learned how to ride with no hands. Dad taught me how to clean and lubricate my bike.

Nothing else in my life mattered but that bike. Some things never change. ❤️🚲

Ride like a girl; vote like a woman 🗳️🩵I can’t recall exactly when we launched this saddle or began using this tagline. Maybe @pauladyba or @sbhroc will remember? But it was long before it became a mantra for women and girls everywhere.

“The US Bicycling Hall of Fame in Davis, CA,will induct five legends of American cycling…in the fall of 2025,” the organization announced. I’m thrilled that I’ll be one of them. According to @usbhofdavis I’m being recognized for my “decades of work…in support of women in cycling.” It’s been the honor of my life to serve a sport that has also been my lifelong passion. Many thanks to all of you who have, in turn, supported me along the way. What a great ride it’s been!
